Tropical Downpours to Avoid Drought Areas

A disturbance responsible for several inches of rain in South Florida over the weekend is likely to avoid the hardest-hit drought areas in the Southeast.
It rained cats and dogs over portions of South Florida, the Bahamas and Cuba over the weekend. However, the disturbance responsible for the moisture will swing out to the west over the Gulf of Mexico during the middle of the week.
According to Southern and Tropical Weather Expert Dan Kottlowski, "The moisture will then swing toward Louisiana, Mississippi and western Alabama later in the week."
Between 2.00 and 5.00 inches of rain have fallen on portions of South Florida and the Keys since midday Saturday.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect these areas through Tuesday as the system is rather large and slow-moving.
The downpours will bring some disruptions to outdoor plans and brief travel delays.
"Unfortunately, an area of high pressure will block the rainfall from swinging into central and northern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina this week," Kottlowski said.
These areas continue to experience severe to exceptional drought conditions, which have their roots into last year.
