Drenching Downpours Shift into Northeast
June 12, 2012; 6:00 PM
After weekend rain drenched the Gulf Coast, the core of the heaviest rain will shift from the Southeast into the Northeast today.
A surge of tropical moisture lifting into the Northeast ahead of an approaching front will set the stage for widespread showers and thunderstorms today.
This is the same batch of tropical moisture which dropped 13.13 inches of rain on Pensacola, Fla., Saturday.
Locally heavy showers and storms shifted into cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore and Binghamton early this morning while the heaviest rain will work into New York City and Albany through the late morning hours. Even Boston and Portland will get in on the precipitation by tonight.

Downpours can produce locally up to an inch or more of rainfall in any given location, which can lead to urban and small stream flooding.
Low-lying and poor drainage areas are especially at risk.
As always, NEVER drive through flooded roadways as you never know how deep the water might be.

Today's storms could cause problems with at least one Major League Baseball game as the first place Pittsburgh Pirates take on the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore. Luckily, the remaining mid-Atlantic and New England teams are all out of town during the midweek time frame.
This front will become hung up along the mid-Atlantic coast and in New England Wednesday, keeping unsettled weather in the forecast for Boston, Portland and New York City.
In the Southeast, the same front will eventually stall out, providing the spark for additional showers and thunderstorms through the middle of the week.

Precipitation coverage through the week will diminish gradually, but any additional rain that falls should help the ongoing drought situation.
