Tropical downpours to soak North East India, Bangladesh into Sunday

December 09, 2017; 10:45 AM

Low pressure in the Bay of Bengal will threaten parts of eastern India and Bangladesh with heavy rain into Sunday.

The low pressure will continue to spread downpours from coastal Odisha and West Bengal to Bangladesh and North East India into Saturday.

The repeated downpours will elevate the risk of flooding and mudslides.

Choppy seas will also be stirred across the northern Bay of Bengal, creating hazards for swimmers and operators of small craft.

Conditions will begin to improve in Puri and Kolkata by Sunday as the storm weakens further and the heaviest rainfall focuses on Bangladesh and North East India.

Rainfall across Bangladesh will be heaviest across the southern half of the country where totals of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) are expected. This threat includes Dhaka and Chittagong.

Similar amounts are expected in the southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and southern Manipur states of North East India.

Across both Bangladesh and North East India, there can be localized amounts to 150 mm (6 inches).

The threat for widespread heavy rain will come to an end by early next week across Bangladesh and North East India as the low pressure dissipates over land.
