Update to the long-range pattern into early February

January 04, 2019; 10:11 AM

It still looks like we may see a significant pattern change late in the month and into early February due to the delayed impact of the ongoing major stratospheric warming event ongoing over the Arctic region.

Where the core of the cold and potential storminess sets up is still in question, but with a projected -NAO setting up at the end of the month, it would favor more east coastal storminess.

Must keep in mind that the Pacific jet remains quite strong and has been dominant. This may also be a key player down the road and could dampen the potential impacts of a -NAO pattern.
